The ukulele is such a versatile instrument which lends itself well to pretty much any style - fingerpicking, folk, rock, blues, jazz, flamenco and clawhammer. Discover the secrets of how MJ & JT’s choose to arrange covers and their own original songs. It’s usually something a bit kooky or unusual that you’d not normally expect to play on a ukulele. Learn how to give a song your style, covering, transposing into a good key more suitable for uke, different parts for uke, riffs, solos, and interesting stops, starts or endings. Open to all levels but should be able to play basic chords.

Workshop 5 - Folk Elements with Jason Darling

Kala Marquee (Astroturf) limits 80, 60mins

Focusing on song, using a handful of folk classics to show how changes, dynamics, syncopation, simple harmonica fills, and rhythm hand nuance can transform a standard accompaniment into a breath of creativity. Express yourself through the songs of others without taking liberties or strangling the context of the words.

Jason will outline many rhythmic techniques ranging in complexity, so there is something for every level of player.

The colour tones available for any chord you might be strumming, the force, stroke and overall attack as well as the connection of uke and voice will be broken down, and the use of a harmonica in a rack to support one’s playing will be discussed in detail.

The harmonica is simple in its structure and most folk songs can be enhanced with little time for learning. The harp can become a furiously complex instrument if one wishes to push its limits, yet in the folk spectrum it is no more difficult than tying a lace - yet many times more expressive. Open to all levels but should be able to play basic chords. Workshop 60 mins.
